Prawn Gassi is a Mangalorean (South India) dish.  This dish is cooked in a coconut milk based  curry.  This dish goes well with Chapati or Rice.  This dish is delicious and high in protein.  You should try cooking this dish at home.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Prawns – 1 kg.  Remove the skin, de-vien it and clean it with water. Keep it aside.
  • Onion – 3 medium size.  Cut into small pieces.
  • Tomato – 2 medium size.  Cut into small pieces.
  • Garlic – 6 to 8 cloves.
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece.
  • Tamarind pulp – 2 tbs.
  • Green chill – 1 – cut into pieces.
  • Mint leaves – 2 tsp.
  • Black pepper -6 to 8 seeds.
  • Fenugreek seeds – half tsp.
  • Coriander seeds – 2 tsp.
  • Cinnamon stick – 1 inch.
  • Clove – 4 to 6 piece.
  • Coconut – freshly cut or grated – 2 tbs.
  • Coconut – Half – for prepearing coconut milk.
  • Red Chillies – 6 to 8 pieces.
  • Cummin seeds – 1 tsp.
  • Tureric powder – half tsp.
  • Salt to taste.
  • Cooking oil – 2 tbs.

Method:

  • Grind the coconut in a grinder with little water.  Grind it into fine paste. Place a cotton cloth on top of a bowl.  Pour this grinded coconut on to the cotton cloth.  Sqeeze it to remove coconut milk from it which will collect in the bowl.  OR you can just buy ready made coconut milk.  I prefer to use fresh coconut milk.
  • Marinate the prawns with little salt and black pepper powder.  Mix them well and keep it in Fridge for 30 minutes.
  • Take a Kadai or deep Pan.  Add cooking oil. Heat it up.
  • Add cummin seeds and allow it to crackle.
  • Add chopped green chillies, red chillies, cinnamon stick, black pepper, clove, ginger, garlic, coriander seeds, fenugreek seeds, cut coconuts and onion into the Kadai.  Fry them well until onion turn golden brown.
  • Add salt to taste and mix them well.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook them until tomatoes start peeling off their skin.
  • Add tumeric powder and mix them well.
  • Turn off the heat and allow this masalas to cool down.
  • Take a mixer grinder.  Add all these fried masalas into the grinder.  Add Tamarind pulp.  Add little water.  Grind them into fine paste.
  • Add 1 tbs of cooking oil into the same Kadai and heat it up.
  • Add this grinded masala paste and cook it for 5 minutes.  Keep stiring it.
  • Add marinated prawns to the Kadai.  Stir them well Cook the prawns in this masalas on high heat for 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Slow down the heat.  Very slowly and little by little add all the coconut milk into Kadai.  Keep stiring continuously while adding coconut milk.
  • Mix them well and increase the heat to medium.
  • Cover the Kadai with a lid and allow it to coo for another 4 to 5 minutes on medium heat.
  • Prawns doen’t take much time to cook.
  • Turn of the heat.
  • Garnish Prawn Gassi with chopped coriander leaves or mint leaves.  Serve the Prawn Gassi hot.
  • Eat with chapati of rice.
